Waipio Resident Takes on the County: We want a Safe Road

At Mayor Kenoi’s November 12th Honokaa Talk Story, Waipio resident Margaret Loo stood up to Mayor Kenoi and Public Works Director Warren Lee. She said the Waipio farmers asked her to speak. She explained the Waipio Road is so full of humps and pot holes that bringing up a truck full of taro is dangerous---either you have to go down into the holes or close to off the cliff. She said Public Works reps keep giving them excuses, all about the earthquake or the oil mix controversy or some other problem.

Well seems to me it is time for Director Warren Lee to take Road Maintenance Division Head Stanley Nakasone aside .Here is the conversation I suggest they have:

Warren: Stanley you need to tell your Hamakua man, Mac Asato, that we are going to do good by these folks as soon as possible. Stanley, I want you and Mac to see this job is done right. I sure don't want Margaret Loo to be back at our door complaining a few years from now. Start by digging up the old bad pavement areas -- including the sections with the cold mix that probably should have been hot mix and now needs to be replaced. Otherwise we are just putting more layers on top of the weak base course. Let’s do this road right for the long haul. You know, while on our watch we don’t want to see any temporary solutions that in the long run won’t hold up. This is not the time to waste taxpayers' money with redo’s and more redo’s --that wouldn't be needed if the job is done top notch the first time.
Stanley: Sounds good -- I'll talk to Mac and see when we can fit this job into our schedule in the next 90 days.

Well that proposed dialogue is meant as encouragement ---- but it would be great for this repair work to be completed within the next 90 days.
